Lily and Iris's abuelo (my dad) came to visit for a few days last Friday. He left yesterday morning and Lily has been asking for him ever since.
"Where Welo go?"
"He went home, Lily."
"But we ARE home. This is home."
"This is our home, sweetie, not Abuelo's."
He took us to the Omaha Children's Museum on Tuesday and the girls had a BLAST! Absolutely loved it. Word to the wise: bring extra clothing. LOL. Lily was soaked from "putting out a house fire" in the "Fire Department." We saw the dinosaurs, which weren't as great as they made them sound, but Lily didn't care. And then dug in the sand for excavation. Doodled, played instruments... There was so much to do and we didn't even get to do it all. The only downside is that you have to pay 7$ for anyone 2 and older.
There was going to be more to this post but my mind just shut off....

04: Conversations with Lily
Sitting on the floor playing with the girls.
LILY: Mami! You're chocolate milk!
ME: confused Um, ok.
LILY: grabs my arm and proceeds to "drink" me from shoulder with slurping sounds. Mmm, ah!
Iris, Lily and I sitting in front of the opened front door, enjoying the cool breeze, the lovely day, and a bag of popcorn.
ME: taking bits of popcorn that were not burnt or too crunchy and setting them aside for Iris. Take a peice and place in my palm. I'm going to save this for Iris.
LILY: Takes a peice and places in her own palm. I'm going to save this for Lily. stares at it, proceeds to eat it.
LILY: on her potty after urinating I'm done, Mami!! I'm done! I'm done!! I'mdoneI'mdoneI'mdone!!!!
ME: also on potty Okay, Lily you'll have to wait until I'm done. You're such a dork.
LILY: No I'm not, I'm a girl!
ME: Yes, Lily. That's correct. I know you're a girl.
LILY: after a short pause of concentration. What would you do if I was a boy?
ME: confused I don't...know.
This kid amuses the hell out of me. ;)

03: A MUCH needed update
Grabbed the girls this morning and went to Head Start today.
Lily was a little hyper at first, but after a fe minutes she calmed down a bit and interacted with the other kids as well as the teachers. She fit it nicely and after a half hour of being there did not want to leave! She introduced herself, was very well-mannered with her please, thank-you, no thanks, and you're welcomes, and impressed everyone with how smart she is.
I let the teacher know where she stood developmentally. She's not much of a talker, though she tries, but she can identify numbers from 0 to 15 and her entire alphabet in both cases. She knows both her primary and secondary colors, and all her shapes. She still has some difficulty with diamond and octagon, but not much. To top it off she can spell and write her name and we've been practicing writing all the other letters of the alphabet and the numbers (which I have already mentioned in previous entries.)
The head teacher (all of their names evade me) said that she was very advanced for her age and that I've done a really good job with her. I'm very proud. I'm the only one working with the girls during the day so I can't help but feel very proud of my girls' development when they are right on track or better. J helps out, but during the work week he only gets an average of three hours to spend with the girls, and one hour of that is spent eating and making dinner. I know he wishes he could spend more time with the girls. I know both the girls and I do. :( At least they get plenty of play time with Daddy on the weekend. ;)
That's about it. Did numbers 1-6 worksheets today at the library, came home, had lunch, and a nap. We're going back on Thursday to fill out an application. We'll be put on a waiting list and then contacted when she turns three to see when she starts the program. I'm super excited. She had so much fun there.
Did I mention how proud I am of how smart my baby girl is? I can't believe in just a little over three months she will be 3. She's already fully potty-trained and her speech has developed so much over the past few months. I try and work with her as much as I can with her speech by adding new words to her vocabulary. We got outside every day, or almost every day, and we grab things from the outside, observe them, and then put a name to them. I'm teaching her the different plants and leaves we see. And different forms of moving our feet. (march, run, walk, etc)
Carla, her Learning for Life teacher, is also very impressed at how smart she is. She comes by once a month to check on her development and to show me what I should be teaching her. I love this program, both my girls are in it. Anyway, I think that's about it.
Physically, Lily's the size of the average four-year-old. Kid is absolutely enormous. LOL. She is currently getting over a little bug she aquired from her father, but all that's left now is some mood swings and a runny nose. She's a terror at home but she's such a social butterfly and loves being around people. I'm amazed at how fast she's growing. She's not my little baby for much longer. She helps out a lot with her baby sister. Absolutely adores being with her and playing with her. She's still learning not to be so rough with the baby but those two are completely enamored of each other. She helps when feeding Iris, and with diaper changes, and on walks. (Currently, she's singing Twinkle, Twinkle to her "baby sistuh") She's such a big girl now.
Why can't the little ones stay little forever? Oh well, at least I get to watch her grow. <3
OMG!!!
I can't believe I've forgotten to update this thing for the baby like I had planned. Shame on me! Seriously. Can you believe it's been almost a year? The last thing I wrote about Iris was when she came into this world.
Well, she's 10 and a half months now and so tiny in comparison to her sister. At this point, Lily was enormous (and still is) but Iris is as big as Lily was at 7 months. She's a little over 20 pounds and around 27 inches. At her 9 month check up she was 19 lbs 5 oz and 27 inches tall. She's such a cutie though.
She loves to play with her big sister. She's always crawling behind her and observing what she is doing. She's very observant. Doesn't talk much with others are around, but when left to her own devices she's always laughing or "singing" to herself. She'll just randomly space out and then start to dance and sing to herself when she's bored. She now waves, too, and says hi when doing so. Just the basics in speech, though. Hi/Bye, Mama, Dada, and "Yeah". Loves to point and couch cruise, too. She absolutely hates being in her playpen or crib; has to constantly keep moving.
I still nurse a lot, but that's only because I, personally, just don't want to stop yet. She's so spoiled. And she LOVES to eat. She's eating everything we eat now, even though she still doesn't have any teeth.
I still can't believe how fast she's grown. In a month and a half she'll be one and she won't be my little infant anymore. :( Why do they grow so fast?!

XXXIII: Labor and delivery
OK, so I said I'd post a labor and delivery story when I got more sleep. That's not going to happen any time soon so here it goes...
I woke up on Oct 25th feeling very crampy and uncomfortable. I had been feeling like that for a while now so I just ignored it and went on about my day. I figured they were contractions, but I wanted them to be closer before going to the hospital. By the afternoon they were getting stronger but were still irregular so I decided to put my toddler and self down for a nap. We woke up at 7. While walking down the stairs they hit pretty hard. Making sure they were not Braxton-Hicks's, I decided to walk the dog and called up my good friend. She then timed my contractions while I walked the dog. They were two-minutes apart at 1 minute length. I decided I should go into the hospital that night as I had been advised to go in when contractions started. I had had a previous c-section and wanted to try a VBAC. Since there is risk for uterine rupture, they have to monitor the labor at all times.
I let my husband know while he made dinner. Luckily I had everything packed and ready to go for weeks, so I didn't have to worry about anything else except for my ID and insurance which was sitting on the dining table in a neat pile.
After dinner my contractions were hitting harder and I just wanted to cry. I have a pretty high pain tolerance so I could function just fine, but that didn't mean it wasn't hurting like hell. So we grabbed our toddler and the bags and got everything in the car and hauled ass to the hospital. The drive is normally 45 minutes. We made it there in half the time.
J was very sweet and held my hand the entire time while I was in pain, which helped. I needed something to hold on to when I was in pain.
I did all the regular stuff when I got there and they placed me in the L&D room with all the monitors hooked up. It was sometime passed 8 when I got there...
Almost 24 HOURS LATER--My contractions are still 2 minutes apart, 1 minute long, hurt like hell. I'm crying every once in a while from the pain and guess what...My body was not responding to it...AT ALL. I was at 1 cm 50% effaced when I got there and stayed there through the entire night. My OB came in and gave me some alternatives. She knew I did not want another c-section and I explained to her my reasons. (I had a crappy experience the first time.) She understood and was willing to do other things if I was still wanting to wait it out. She was very considerate and gave me time to think. After bawling like a baby that my body was just not going to do this naturally, I talked to my husband and decided it would be best to do another cesarean. Everyone was supportive and my OB was actually shocked that I had chosen the C instead. She kept asking me if I was sure. I let her know that my body didn't tolerate labor last time, it obviously wasn't going to do it this time either. I was exhausted and in a lot of pain. I couldn't go home b/c of the risks. I was willing to suck it up and take the surgery.
And so, with my husband, some awesome anesthesiologists, goofy nurses, my OB and the resident OB, my daughter was delivered that night (26 Oct) at 8:38.
It was a better experience than my last cesarean. I had people who supported me and didn't nag me. I had a great staff helping me. There was no emergency so there was no rush. And now my husband fully understands what it's like to have a c-section since he watched the whole thing.
My personal recovery time was incredibly short. I was on the phone the minute the rolled me out of the OR and put me in my room. I was there for three days. The only pain I was suffering from was from the incision as it healed and from my edema (which got so bad I couldn't walk sometimes.) My husband took a week off of work and helped out. He started going back a couple of days ago, and I've actually been okay being alone with the girls. I was expecting worse, but Lily has been a good big sister and Iris sleeps 98% of the time.
I've gotten the hang of breastfeeding (FINALLY!) to where I no longer supplement with formula and where I can walk around the house with her still attached to my boob and me hold her in one arm as I chase my toddler down the hall who has something in her hand she's not supposed to.
Iris is a week and a half (4 days) today. Her umbilicus fell off this morning so she now has a regular belly button. So now I don't have to worry about putting her in her onesies and footies and can give her a regular bath.
*sigh* It's nice having two gorgeous baby girls. (Even if one isn't so much a baby anymore.)
